When it comes to food, the UK often has a bad reputation; it is often described as bland, boring or even unhealthy. While it is true that there are many more popular alternatives in Europe for national dishes such as in Spain or Italy, I think that Britain still has a lot to offer in terms of great eats! Here is a list of fantastic culinary wonders from the British Isles for you to try at home or even give a go when visiting!
1. Full English Breakfast
A hearty breakfast featuring bacon, sausages, eggs (fried, scrambled, or poached), baked beans, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, black pudding, and toast. Often accompanied by a cup of tea or coffee, it's a staple of British mornings and a favourite in cafés across the country.
2. Fish and Chips
A classic British takeaway meal consisting of battered and deep-fried white fish (typically cod or haddock) served with chunky chips. Traditionally accompanied by mushy peas, tartar sauce, and a sprinkle of salt and vinegar, it's best enjoyed by the seaside.
3. Sunday Roast
A traditional meal served on Sundays, featuring roasted meat (beef, chicken, lamb, or pork), roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables, and lashings of rich gravy. Horseradish sauce, mint sauce, or apple sauce may be added depending on the choice of meat.
4. Shepherd’s Pie
A comforting dish made with minced lamb cooked in a rich gravy with onions, carrots, and peas, topped with a layer of creamy mashed potato and baked until golden brown. The beef version of this dish is called Cottage Pie.
5. Toad in the Hole
A delicious dish of sausages baked in a fluffy Yorkshire pudding batter, often served with onion gravy and vegetables. Despite its unusual name, it’s a much-loved comfort food in Britain.
6. Steak and Kidney Pie
A traditional British pie filled with diced beef, kidney (usually lamb or ox), and a rich, savoury gravy, all encased in a buttery shortcrust or flaky puff pastry. Often served with mashed potatoes and vegetables, it’s a true pub favourite.
7. Ploughman’s Lunch
A simple yet delicious cold meal typically consisting of crusty bread, cheese (often Cheddar or Stilton), pickled onions, chutney, ham or cold meats, and salad. Originally a traditional meal for farmworkers, it’s now a popular pub dish.
8. Treacle Tart
A delicious pastry dessert with a buttery shortcrust base filled with a sweet and tangy mixture of golden syrup (often called "light treacle"), breadcrumbs, and lemon juice. It’s traditionally served warm with a dollop of clotted cream or custard. Treacle Tart is also famously known as Harry Potter’s favourite dessert!
