Keeping your English fresh over the summer

The holidays are a great time to relax and recharge, but that doesn’t mean your English skills have to take a break too! Whether you’re travelling, staying at home, or just enjoying some downtime, there are plenty of easy and fun ways to keep your English sharp. Here are a few tips to help you practise without it feeling like hard work:

  1. Watch films and series in English
Pick something you enjoy – whether it’s a classic British comedy, a gripping drama, or a feel-good series – and watch it in English. Subtitles in English can help you follow along and improve your listening and reading skills at the same time. Take a look at our blog posts on the best films and series to practice your listening skills!
  2. Read for pleasure
Now’s the time to read that book you’ve been meaning to start! Choose something at your level or just slightly above. Don’t worry about understanding every single word – focus on the story and enjoy the process. If you would like some suggestions then check out our blog post on great reads for English learners!
  3. Keep a holiday journal
Write a few lines each day about what you’ve done, how you’re feeling, or what you’re looking forward to. It’s a great way to practise vocabulary, sentence structure, and self-expression.
  4. Listen to podcasts or music
Pop in your headphones and listen to English-speaking podcasts or songs. Try to catch new words or phrases, and don’t be afraid to sing along – it’s good for pronunciation! If you’re looking for a great podcast then look no further than DAWAY!
  5. Chat with friends in English
If you’ve got classmates or friends who are also learning English, suggest chatting online in English during the break. Even short messages or voice notes can help you stay in practice.
  6. Change your phone or apps to English
This little trick can expose you to everyday vocabulary and phrases in a natural way. Just make sure you know how to switch it back, just in case!

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection – it’s consistency. A little bit of English every day goes a long way. Enjoy your holidays and keep up the great work!
